POINT BLANK (2010)

THE PLOT THUS FAR

Samuel Pierret (Gilles Lellouche) is a nurse who saves the wrong guy — a thief (Roschdy Zem) whose henchmen take Samuel’s pregnant wife (Elena Anaya) hostage to force him to spring their boss from the hospital. A race through the subways and streets of Paris ensues, and the body count rises. Can Samuel evade the cops and the criminal underground and deliver his beloved to safety?

WHAT WE THOUGHT

Gilles Lelouch is a happily-married expectant father working as a nurse in a hospital whose life is turned upside down when he prevents the murder of a patient, a career villain mown down by a motorbike while being pursued by two shady characters. The villain’s accomplice kidnaps Gilles’ wife and orders him to smuggle his mate out of hospital or she dies. From there, the film turns into “The Fugitive” on steroids.

The climax of the film requires the leads to get all the French gangs to launch a crime wave which will allow them to sneak into the police station and steal a video tape that will exonerate them. Not only is that plan ridiculous but it requires cheering the criminals. As in many French crime films there is a degree of romanticism of the immigrant gangs, whilst the film makes a failed attempt to make a criminal joint hero, despite his unsavoury past and actions.

The Blu-Ray comes with a behind-the-scenes documentary and trailer. The DTS-HD 5.1 master audio track is pretty strong, but the transfer doesn’t know how to handle the deep blacks of night shooting. If you can get past that, it’s an adequate HD presentation. However, the A/V obsessive will take issue with it. I’d recommend a rental.
