THE PLOT THUS FAR
After the events at Lake Victoria, the pre-historic school of blood-thirsty piranhas make their way into a newly opened waterpark.
WHAT WE THOUGHT
Taking place one year after the events of the first movie, the movie opens with a cameo from Gary Busey and Clu Gulagar being attacked by Piranhas ripping out of a dead cow’s ass. Yes, that is the level of humor we are dealing with. Brace yourself, because it gets worse. The next day, Maddy is in a bit of a disagreement with her stepfather Chet because he’s turned the family water park into a more adult oriented place with strippers as lifeguards. However, the piranha’s are back, and headed to the pool via the pipe system. Her friends Barry and Kyle must now try to do something to stop the upcoming onslaught-and you can guess how that goes.
They cut the budget for this second one and they simply try way too hard to force a classic campy feel. It worked so well in the first one and it falls flat here. Its not a total write off, there are some truly great laughs…even if they are caused by being gratuitously violent or using blatant nudity to catch your attention. They do connect the film back to the first and even feature a couple of the original characters and I love that they did that for the fans. The build up to the actual piranhas wasn’t nearly as intense as the first. It was as though they tried to force the humor and the horror together too quickly.
The Blu-Ray comes with the movie in 3D, HD and Standard Definition. The A/V Quality is damn near reference quality with a superb 1080p transfer and DTS-HD 5.1 master audio track. The 3D effects worked for the major kills, but it’s not like anyone was really amping up the spectacular effects. Not bad, not great; it’s a modest entry to show off the merits of 3D Blu-Ray. There’s also featurettes, commentary, deleted scenes, bonus short and some bloopers. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase.
