THE PLOT THUS FAR
WHAT WE THOUGHT
“Only in America with Larry the Cable Guy” is a show currently being shown on the History Channel–having debuted couple months ago. Each episode consists of Larry visiting various jobs throughout the USA where he learns about the job and then tries it out for himself. In style, it’s very much like Mike Rowe’s “Dirty Jobs” but the emphasis is much more on Larry’s gentle humor and rarely is meant to be gross or harrowing. Instead, it showcases interesting jobs and lets Larry interview them and pokes very gentle fun at them and himself.
The show itself is a quick rush, as Larry hits up three states and random activities in each episode. Whether he’s clowning around or making moonshine, Larry is fast to jump in on the action and enjoy himself in a variety of fields. Is there much room for educational opportunities? Oh no. This is more for trivia and quick amusement. I see History slipping into more shows like this as the years go on, as the TLC effect is starting a general dumb-down of this kind of television programming.
The DVD comes with no special features. However, you get strong A/V Quality for a show that I’m not sure is natively shot in HD. I’ve seen the HD broadcast before, but something didn’t ring true with a show that has no field of depth and plenty of compression issues when taken out of standard definition. That being said, you’re still getting a smidge under 7 hours of material on two discs. Good times abound, as you watch Larry take part in the events. I’d recommend a rental.
