NOVEL ROMANCE, A

THE PLOT THUS FAR

While waiting for their significant others to arrive two strangers meet as if by fate. Through an unexpected series of events the unlikely couple becomes roommates best friends and eventually lovers.

WHAT WE THOUGHT

Finding themselves at loose ends hot on the heels of a chance encounter in a New York City restaurant, penniless novelist Nate and luxury-loving young beauty Jenny decide to form a modern-day Odd Couple and move in together. The problem is that the Guttenberg seems to be in his own world, while the chicks are acting at softcore levels. The film lacks any direction and nobody seems to be on the same page.

The film almost feels like a joke that Guttenberg paid to see turned into a film. While working as the star and producer, he anchors a film that centers around an older guy being played off as a likeable guy that all the chicks want. The central conceit of the guy trying to publish a novel almost takes a back seat to the sheer egotistics on display here. If I knew that Mahoney would turn into this kind of guy, I would’ve been rooting for Harris to have the guy jailed a long time ago.

The DVD comes with an audio commentary, Director’s DVD introduction and deleted scenes. The A/V Quality is passable with a surprisingly strong Dolby 5.1 track. However, the transfer shows off the indie nature of the film and it’s one that’s plagued with edge enhancement. Other than that, you can enjoy listening to the Guttenberg on the commentary. In the end, I’d recommend a rental.
