NBC Local Integrated Media today announced 10 apps for iPhone and iPod touch users, each linked to an NBC “Locals Only” city-site, now available on the App Store. The apps are designed to connect users with the latest local news, information and entertainment, while empowering them to sound off through personal photos and observations. Apps are available for the following areas: San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, Dallas Fort Worth, New York, San Diego, Philadelphia, Washington, Chicago, Connecticut and Miami.

“These iPhone and iPod touch apps are an entirely new experience that highlight the energy of the cities through a highly visual interface and dynamic stories, not just from our editorial teams, but from our users – the city insiders,” said Katherine Wu, VP Business Operations, Local Integrated Media. “Now iPhone and iPod touch users can easily create and share their own content, tell other locals what’s worth checking out, revel in unusual and surprising happenings in their city, offer opinions about local issues, and post confessions anonymously all while on-the-go.”

The apps leverage NBC’s innovative “SoMyCity” social media feature, allowing iPhone and iPod touch users to post personal moments on the websites as well as on Facebook and Twitter. In addition, a filter function allows users to organize the exclusive content in various ways and navigate to their favorite local franchises, such as’s fashion blog, The Thread and’s Dallas Cowboys’ blog, Blue Star.

Featuring a clean, modern layout consistent with the “Locals Only” web sites, the apps boast several viewing options, including a photo-based representation of the sites’ top headlines and user-submitted moments. The images vary in size so that the top stories, either created by NBC or local users, are most prominent on the screen. Users are invited to zoom in and zoom out, shake the iPhone and explore the content with a simple tap or slide of the finger.
