MOON MAN

MOONmandvdbox

FROM THE BACK OF THE BOX:

A bored Man in the Moon hitches a ride to Earth on the tails of a passing comet and starts to explore the fantastical creatures and sights of a new planet. But all is not well – the Moon Man’s absence from his post means that all the world’s children are unable to sleep. Before the President can capture him, they must join forces to return him to his rightful place in the sky.

FROM THE BACK OF MY BRAIN:

“Moon Man” is an adaptation of a kid’s tale, but it feels like “The Little Prince” to me. A bored little weirdo gets abducted by a comet and comes to Earth to learn new things. How is that not “The Little Prince”? For the young kids out there, “The Little Prince” was a story about a small boy living on a meteor/asteroid who comes to Earth and meets all sorts of weirdos. Bob Fosse and Gene Wilder were in the film adaptation.

Adapting tales fit for kids from different languages always leaves something to be desired on the cultural front. You’re either missing the point of the original language or you’re staging something bizarre in order to sell it to strange kids. Basically, you’re losing one audience to gain the other. What in the hell are you supposed to do with that? I don’t know and I’m not sure that I’m ever going to find out.

The DVD comes with no extras. However, the Dolby track holds up really well for an English dub of a foreign animated flick. I’ve been stumbling through similar samplings of the 1970s and realizing how easily that translation can be screwed up. The transfer is pretty standard for non HD. So, if you’re still curious…pick it up for your kids.
