MAN OF LA MANCHA REVIEWED
“Man of La Mancha” is well noted for being a flop. Still, it’s amazing to see such an early 1970s misfire. This is coming off the editing hack job on “1776” and “Cabaret” actually impressing people. This film feels sort of like a campy step back. First, you have the bizarre makeup choices for Peter O’ Toole. Then, you have the most bizarre rape scene for Sophia Loren. If that wasn’t enough, America learned who James Coco was, as he tried his best to save the movie.
I’m not a huge fan of Arthur Hiller, but you could see an earnest effort to save a film. It’s just that no one was really claiming for a film musical about the creation of Don Quixote. Yes, theater nerds. I know that your precious musical won the Tony in 1965. If that were the true mark of quality, then so many other shows would’ve been adapted into stellar productions. Sometimes, fans have to realize something increasingly important in adaptations. Certain elements are sewn into the fabric of media outlets and not others.
