LOVERS, THE

THE LOVERS REVIEWED

“The Lovers” is an adult film about a couple determining whether they should stay together. Holy hell, it’s like Alan Alda took us all back to 1980! The film is a downer, but A24 tried to sell it like a romantic farce. If I have to find a comparison, I’d say it plays like lighter Bergman. Not too serious, but it also doesn’t destroy the characterization of what the main couple establishes. The side pieces of the couple tend to get in the way, the same goes for their kid.

The film tries to understand love and how it relates to aging in Western society. Religious and social constructs keep people together a lot longer than need be. Still, there’s something to be said for personality change and growing apart. The only one that seems to understand this is the sweet Erin. She’s not callous, but she really wants answers for why everything seems to be falling apart. This is the film that nobody saw, while audiences spent a weekend flocking to Pirates 5.

Do the right thing and pick it up this week. You always could stand having a downer movie in your back pocket.
