LOOK: SEASON 1

THE PLOT THUS FAR

The post 9/11 world has forever changed the notion of privacy. There are now approximately 40 million surveillance cameras in the United States generating more than 4 billion hours of footage every week. And the numbers are growing. The average American is now captured over 200 times a day, in department stores, gas stations, changing rooms, even public bathrooms. No one is spared from the relentless, unblinking eye of the cameras that are hidden in every nook and cranny of day-to-day life.

Shot entirely from the point of view of security cameras, Adam Rifkin’s hit Showtime series Look is about the things that people do when they don’t know they’re being watched and takes you on a voyeuristic journey into the most personal parts of their lives.

Look around you and wonder…who is watching?

WHAT WE THOUGHT

Ribald hypocrisy would seem to lie at the core of this community’s values, as several people openly flaunt their unguarded disdain for their fellow characters, with menacing disregard to the injuries they inflict upon the people around them, all the while demanding uncompromising devotion from the very ones they betray. Not everyone acts this way, but this theme defines the complexion of each 30 minute episode.

Look, written and directed by Adam Rifkin, who also wrote the film of the same name, loosely follows a dozen or so characters throughout the series, and gradually peels back the layers that make up the façade of their everyday personas, revealing deeper and deeper truths hidden within the dark reaches of each person. The show predicates its concept on the fact that everyone suffers damage of some kind, and we all find clever ways hide to hide it. Look pierces that protective social armor, and unearths the real person inside – sometimes ugly, bitter, pathetic, vulnerable, depraved, and always anxious.

The DVD comes with no special features. But, you’re getting the complete uncut first season in airing order. The A/V Quality is strong enough for standard definition, but it lacks any real WOW moments. That being said, if you enjoyed the movie…you’ll like the show. I’d recommend a rental.
