KING OF TRIADS

THE PLOT THUS FAR

When the boss of a ruling Hong Kong triad is arrested and executed in China for counterfeiting money, mayhem ensues as the mob’s leading contenders circle the throne.

WHAT WE THOUGHT

When the violent death of a Hong Kong mob boss allows another gangster to take over, he wastes no time in extorting the children of the murdered boss. But the family decides to fight back and plots to regain control of the triad organization.

Andy On has developed into a genuinely skilled martial artist with a tough guy attitude and he has plenty of scenes in this movie to show it off. Nicky Li does the choreography, which is aggressive, hard-hitting, violent, and requires athleticism to pull off. Li also did Invisible Target and Legendary Assassin; picture Wu Jing’s speed combined with Tony Jaa’s visceral power and that’s the kind of fighting you get to see Andy On do here.

The DVD comes with a trailer gallery, behind the scenes featurette and interviews. The A/V Quality is strong enough for an Asian action flick that has been prepared for Region 1. The English dub sound poorly mixed to the point that it was laughable to even keep it on the disc. The Cantonese track is a wonderful surround mix that should inspire everyone to watch the film in its native language. In the end, I’d recommend a rental.
