THE PLOT THUS FAR
Ahoy, mateys! Set sail for adventure just off the shores of Never Land. Join Jake, Izzy and Cubby, parrot pal Skully and their trusty ship, Bucky, as they go from muddy swamps to enchanted jungles, solving pirate problems and hunting for lost treasure. But watch out for Captain Hook! With the help of faithful Mr. Smee, Hook is always trying to snatch the kids’ treasure, and it’s going to take teamwork, smarts and even pixie dust to outwit him. Overflowing with 7 action-packed episodes filled with treasure, adventure, and fun pirate rock music, JAKE AND THE NEVER LAND PIRATES is swashbuckling fun for everyone!
WHAT WE THOUGHT
The show is this weird mix of New Age non-violence and Peter Pan pirate action. Today’s release sports seven episodes that run the gamut of the usual Disney television fare. Kids are entertained and they have some morals stuffed down their throat. What I don’t get is where this takes place in the Pan chronology.
The colors are great and the voices of Captain Hook and Smee are perfectly inline with the older movies. It also puts a unique spin on the whole Peter Pan story as Peter is no longer on the island and has left it to Jake and his crew to keep up the good times.
The DVD comes with music videos and a sing-along option. The A/V Quality is on par with standard definition TV on DVD, but there is no back audio in the Dolby track. The special features are decent for a split season release, but I would’ve liked to have heard more about the genesis of the show. It’s an interesting take on the Pan mythos and one that I would like to know more about it. I’d recommend for parents of preschool children.
