IT AIN’T PRETTY REVIEWED
“It Ain’t Pretty” is a rather fun look at the world of surfing. But, there’s that nagging issue of sexism in the field. Bianca Valenti leads a team of women profiled in the film, as we see that issues from childhood to their professional lives remain the same. No matter how many records they set or awards they win…they still have to tolerate institutional bullshit. But, they don’t. Working with a new generation of female surfers, these ladies find ways to break the habits of the old world and create something new. If that seems heavy, there’s still a ton of surf footage.
While I’m not familiar with anyone in the documentary, I felt their need to be heard. I’d love to see a future follow-up documentary, but I’m not holding my breath. Pick it up, if you’re curious.
