THE PLOT THUS FAR
Moth is freed on parole after spending time in prison on wrongful conviction of murder. Jailed shortly before the Bulgarian communist coup of 1944, he now finds himself in a new and alien world - the totalitarian Sofia of the 60s. His first night of freedom draws the map of a diabolical city full of decaying neighborhoods, gloomy streets and a bizarre parade of characters.
WHAT WE THOUGHT
This World Series will be forever remembered for a badly blown call by first base umpire Don Derrikinger. Jorge Orta of Kansas City hit a slow roller to first base. The ball was tossed to relief pitcher Todd Worrell of the Cardinals, who appeared to step on first base well before Orta. Orta was called safe, and Worrell protested, followed by Cardinals manager Whitey Herzog. The Royals rally continued, and they took the series the next day in Game seven. The only major drawback to a collection like this is that it doesn’t quite have the drama of watching a game as it’s happening, but that’s the difference between broadcast television and DVD. One is about having millions of people enjoying the same thing all at once in a big, slam-bang communal experience, and the other is a personal adventure that you can take at your own pace and leisure.
After a decade of postseason disappointment, the Royals had to fight like no other playoff team until then. Down 3 games to 1 in the ALCS, they stormed back to beat the Blue Jays to earn the right to face their home-state Cardinals in the I-70 series. The heavily favored Cards featured even less power than the Royals but they had a batting champion in Willie McGee. The Cards took the first two in Kansas City, with a back-breaking 4 run rally in the 9th to win the second game, and soon the Royals found themselves down 3-1 in the postseason yet again and left for dead by the pundits. That's when the Royals magic happened and baseball history was made. All because of one crappy umpire.
The DVD comes with all seven games from the 1985 World Series presented uncut. There's also a highlight reel of the Kansas City Royals and their amazing ride to the top. There's a ton of material about the gang winning the ACLS and the various featurettes about Brett and Saberhagen. When you finally get to the Royals matching up with the Cardinals, you've watched hours of material. These sets are such embarassments of baseball wealth, that I wish A&E/MLB would never stop making these sets. This is a must-buy for any serious baseball fan.
