THE PLOT THUS FAR
WHAT WE THOUGHT
An emerging rapper attempts to get a record contract with the assistance of a desperate hip-hop superstar in this intense musical drama starring Jamie Hector and Wood Harris. Young Eastie (Hector) has the skills to pay the bills, now he just needs to get his music to the masses. A living legend in the world of hip-hop, A-Maze (Harris) is just the man to make that happen. But the record industry can be brutal, and sometimes in order for one star to rise, another must fall. Featuring music by Ja Rule, Trick Daddy, and Lil Scrappy.
Ja Rule continues to star in these movies that make no sense, even when you consider their ethnic origins. A lot of people might want to draw comparisons to "The Harder They Come", but I don't see it. Can a young black man make music and sell drugs and not draw comparisons to that cult classic? Sometimes, a mediocre movie about selling drugs and dancing can be just that. This film is just bland all around, but it works for an amateur effort.
The Blu-Ray comes with deleted scenes that are pretty good. But, the majority of the extra material takes a look at the music and the street aesthetic. There are some trailers and other junk, but the movie is trying to hard to be hood. The AV Quality is pretty sharp with a 1080p transfer that looks amazingly well for a rather indie film. However, I found the DTS track to be a little flat. If you like ghetto cinema, then this is worth a rental.
