THE PLOT THUS FAR
WHAT WE THOUGHT
THE SPACE MUSEUM -
The William Hartnell years tend to be seen as sacred by older Who fans. I guess this is because so few of the episodes actually survived over the years and made their way out of the United Kingdom. However, I only remember the adventure because of the great Beatle debate. Somewhere in the original transmission, the Beatles popped up for a few seconds. Naturally, music rights and other junk have traditionally screwed up re-airings. Now that someone has come along to fix it all, they can't get the Beatles to agree to the clip. So, you have an altered Who episode.
The Daleks, The Mechanoids and Frankenstein's Monster shows up in this adventure. This is where Dr. Who tends to shine and have a chance of standing toe-to-toe with its American cousins. The creatures and weird aliens of Dr. Who were always its strong suit. Playing against the odds and using older FX to its advantage, they managed to piece together something unique. A weird time capsule of pop culture, scientific expectation and old-fashioned ignorance in the name of Pulp adventure.
The DVD comes with some intensive looks at the restoration process. It seems like the BBC didn't take care of any classic show material that predated 1980. Oh well, the photo galleries and commentaries are fun and help to inform American fans about the glory days of this British staple. There's even a ton of photos from the original production effort. The A/V Quality is quite magnificent, even though the paper thin audio doesn't really rise above its original standards. Still, it's a must-buy for all Dr. Who fans.
