THE PLOT THUS FAR

Two detectives investigating a gang-related find themselves targeted by both gang members and crooked cops.

WHAT WE THOUGHT

"Caught in the Crossfire" taps into practically every police drama/mystery film you’ve ever seen before. Starting off with a standoff between the two partners Briggs (Klein) and Shepherd (Rodriquez) and a suspect who claims knowledge of corrupt cops before being gunned down by a group of police officers, the two detectives must backtrack and investigate the shooting to clear their names. This movie had no particular agenda, really, which in itself, is great. It didn't pretend, just proceeded to assemble the parts of a down-to-earth crime story. This gritty drama possesses a sense of validity that its glossy, slick, higher-budget counterparts often lack. This made for a refreshing difference. Lots of surprises from a well-written story that builds the plot deliberately.

What I did find slightly impressive was how the film is divided into a series of flashbacks between an interrogation room where Rodriguez and Kline are separately giving their statements about what happened and scenes actually portraying the events they describe. From the opening scene of a shoot out between officers and their main suspect, the audience immediately gets to see a personal side of the characters and becomes emotionally invested in their reaction to the shootings. While that could've been turned into something rather novel, it just feels like a rather loud change to keep one from falling asleep during the film's slower moments.

The Blu-Ray comes with some trailers and outtakes. The A/V Quality is a rather standard 1080p mix with lossless DTS audio. I couldn't get an exact header on channels, as the weird mix seemed to throw my receiver for a loop. What I did notice is how the dialogue tended to shift in the front with absolutely no regard for the center channel. Still, it was a decent experience and one that I would recommend for a rental.
