THE PLOT THUS FAR

"Paranormal Cops" follows a group of larger-than-life cops who walk one beat during the day as real-life Chicago-area police officers and another at night when they apply their forensic and investigative expertise to paranormal casework. Responding to the pleas of people who are victimized by distressing and inexplicable activities in their homes and workplaces, these cops bring their no-nonsense approach to hunting ghosts, and their real-life police skills to separating fact from fiction and often happen upon results much scarier than the paranormal.

WHAT WE THOUGHT

Off duty police officers in Chicago investigate paranormal reports using forensic techniques and cop logic - for free. To me, this is much more legit than most “investigations,” which are based on beliefs and mythology rather than cold, hard logic. While I really enjoyed watching the detectives figure out what caused the paranormal activity, I was disappointed that there was not one instance where an actual person or animal was causing the noises. Sometimes, there is a truly logical explanation for all those strange occurrences that may seem ghostly. I figured these guys would find the evidence. That never happened. What they did do was lead a bunch of cameramen around town on a goose chase. Just like an off-duty cop.

The series, like many similar shows, uses dim lights, eerie music, and lots of ghost-busting jargon to create an entertainingly creepy experience. What sets Paranormal Cops apart from the crowd is the cast’s attempt to connect the alleged paranormal activities with some of Chicago’s mafia history and criminal folklore. Some of the scenes are spooky, but there are also some silly moments -- like when the tough-talking investigators offer detailed descriptions of their investigative techniques to the alleged ghosts in the room. The way the team connects the strange encounters with dead members of Chicago’s underworld also seems a little too contrived.

The DVD comes with bonus footage for all of the Season 1 episodes. The A/V Quality is pretty strong for recent television on DVD. Still, there's not a whole lot to the affair. It's pretty basic show that was seemingly dumped on A&E. Now, you've got it and the eventual second season dump to DVD. If you're a fan, you'll want to rent it. Everyone else can skip it.
