THE PLOT THUS FAR
City-born rancher Benjamin Ernst and his herd of teenage help return to the Bar None Ranch for another summer of desert dustups and adventures. Season 3 episodes include a baseball game, ghost stories, Brad attending summer school, a wrestling match and even a possible marriage!
WHAT WE THOUGHT
“Hey Dude” arrives in its short final season with a mere 13 episodes. The episodes suffer from the fact that it was brutally apparent that the show was ending. Ted leaves early and we get Jake as a replacement. Jake sucked and nobody could’ve helped to cover the character’s faults. Not even the later season push to highlight Melody in a couple of dramatic moments.
The final season was plagued by cast shifts and Nick’s shift back to animation domination. The result was that we got one of the last big hurrahs for live-action kid shows until iCarly and Zoey 101 brought it back to Nick. You could make the arguments for Weinerville, All That or Roundhouse, but they weren’t continued serials. Serial dramedies are a hard sell for kids and I’m glad that this show existed. By the way, Melody’s drunk brother episode is presented on the final disc uncut.
The DVD comes with no special features. However, you get to fulfill your nostalgia fix. The A/V Quality is rough on a modern home theater, but it’s still presentable. Just don’t project the disc. I learned that the hard way. Anything above 60 inches makes this transfer look like that first Highlander DVD release. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase to fans.
