“Here Comes The Boom” follows a biology teacher who is determine to save the music program from being cut in their school by becoming a mixed-martial arts fighter. While the premise is a bit out there and some of the scenarios are a bit far-fetched this movie works surprisingly well. There are plenty of laughs here that work on numerous levels, but depending on how big a fan of James you are will determine how funny they are. The real surprise here was the fact that there was so much more here than just a stupid comedy. The story is a typical underdog tale with comedy, but enough heart to keep you rooting for James throughout the whole film. Gone is the usual over the top bumbling funny fat guy, in its place was a cooler everyman that works perfectly for this story.

The problem with “Here Comes the Boom” is that its reflective of American pop and general culture. Everything is so lazy anymore, but that’s not even the issue. What happens is that these kinds of movies represent the stalling of our art. Sure, it’s easy to say that not all films are art, but the potential remains. If we indulge childish fantasies and encircled entertainment, we don’t grow. But, does it matter?

Happy Madison will continue to shit these movies out for friends of Sandler. Hell, Coraci is on his third or fourth movie with them. What makes this flick different than “The Waterboy” or “I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry” or “The Zookeeper”? Nothing, as it is a repeating cycle of the same jokes and setups. You change manboy Sandler out for loveable fatty or you dig up David Spade in a pinch. It doesn’t matter, as it’s the same crap over and over again.
