GOD OF WAR REVIEWED

“God of War” is a pretty talky action movie about Chinese pirates. While it tries to play like the bigger costume dramas of a guy like Zhang Yimou, it falls apart. It kills me, but I guess that’s because the budget could only be stretched so far. Still, I wanted some bigger action pieces. Sammo Hung almost hangs the film together, but the focus never sits on him. I’m a fan of Gordon Chan, but the guy is a long way away from Fist of Legend. Pick it up if you’re curious.

The Plot Thus Far

During the 16th century, Japanese pirates proliferate along the Chinese coastline. In 1557, the pirates take over Cengang in Zhejiang. After months of futile advances, Commander Yu (Sammo Hung) finally defeats them under the leadership of newly promoted General Qi (Vincent Zhao). The Pirates, however, manage to escape.
