THE PLOT THUS FAR
Gavin is 31 years old and still lives with his parents. He is awfully shy but before he knows it there are three women interested in him. Lady Minerva Munday has a casual way of life and lives in a basement, Joan is an over-sexed millionairess, married to a Greek architect. But Gavin prefers the ugly assistant in the barbershop.
WHAT WE THOUGHT
Gavin Lamb is a 31 year-old virgin who, in just a few days, will lose his virginity to one woman, almost be forced to marry another, and possibly find true love with a third in this hilarious English comedy. He meets up with Helena Bonham Carter, chick from “Little Voice” and a third party that I couldn’t identify. Being as this is a Randal Kleiser flick, there’s nothing here that’s terribly amazing. Plus, you don’t even get some Blue Lagoon style nipple slippage.
The same magic is the prevailing quality of better known films, like “Love Actually” or several other Hugh Grant British romantic comedies. The storyline is almost formulaic. The acting is good, professional, and heartfelt though unexceptional. The laughs are few though solid. The tears are available but not overpowering. The romance is tender and sincere bot again, not overwhelming. There is nothing in this film that is very over the top. Nothing exceptionally memorable like John Cusack standing outside the girl’s window holding a boom-box with an anthem pounding into your brain.
The DVD comes with no special features. But, you get amazing A/V Quality for a movie on a DVD-R disc. The audio also sounds much more cleaned up than the version I see floating around premium cable. The transfer still comes across a little rough, but that’s what you get for an unremastered film like this. I’d recommend a purchase for all Anglophiles.
