THE PLOT THUS FAR
Blast off your inhibitions as The Simpsons creator Matt Groening brings you another far-out collection of FUTURAMA™ fun! In addition to a full payload of outrageous extras not shown on TV, Volume Six delivers 13 mind-Bendering new episodes that involve time travel, self-replication, covert missions, alien eggs, and more robot roughhousing than you can shake a girder at. It’s a scream…the good kind!
WHAT WE THOUGHT
Set in the year 3000, Matt Groening’s animated sci-fi sitcom follows the adventures of Philip J. Fry, a 20th-century boy who falls into a cryogenic freezing tank and emerges from his suspended state a thousand years in the future. Fry lands a job as a delivery boy at Planet Express, where he meets one-eyed mutant Leela, bumbling robot Bender and a host of other quirky characters. The guys would go on to have a ton of adventures and then get cancelled. Hot DVD sales and syndicated ratings galore brought them back and now we get to thrill to 13 or 14 new episodes a year. Better than space bees, we’re getting non-network releases.
I can’t tell if this is supposed to be the seventh or eighth season, since some people count the movies as one complete season. The season was pretty straight forward with adventures with the Minority Report style police and a fun Prequel adventure with the Professor and Zoidberg. If that wasn’t enough, you got a season finale that played with classic animation, 8 Bit Animation and cheesy Voltron style animation. The laughs are solid and they’re in that period where the character building is hitting that plateau that’s on the verge of making this show a classic. A lot of people want to say it’s better than The Simpsons right now, but I can’t go there. It’s not better, it’s becoming just as good as Homer and Marge’s heyday.
The Blu-Ray comes with featurettes, commentaries and a FAQ. However, the SeasonPlay option is what I’ll remember from this release. What should’ve been an easy way to screen these discs went to Hell for me due to the fact that I just had LASIK. I’m having to relax my eyes a lot and I get tired. Boom! I’m out cold and I have to replay what I missed. But, I don’t really want to finish the first disc right now, so I hop over to Disc 2. Disc 2 won’t play because of where Disc 1 stopped. I don’t care about that, as I just want to watch the second disc. So, I have to empty out the history on the BR player. I do that and it still doesn’t recognize it. So, I just throw the first disc back in and fast forward through what I watched already. Frustrating and it gets in the way of my viewing. The A/V Quality is amazing with a strong 1080p transfer and a solid DTS-HD 5.1 master audio track. Fans and non-fans alike will want to make the purchase.
