THE PLOT THUS FAR
When rich girl Cocolonia can’t shake her stuff at home because of her uptight mom, she hits the streets to join a dance crew who respond to every challenge with a dance.
WHAT WE THOUGHT
“Freak Dance” is a pretty straight forward parody. Goofy white people enter dance contest, older people don’t care for it. People dance and bounce around while I wonder why anyone invested this much effort in a parody. Calling attention to something that is dumb isn’t that revolutionary. Hell, it’s observational comedy which is below the standards that I set for the Upright Citizens Brigade.
But, this is what happens when fans don’t buy “ASSSSCAT!” and their related specials. Nothing is worse than seeing talented comedians fumble around with bland material, while hoping that they make a connection. Comedy is a lot of work, but we shouldn’t have to see every stumble along the way. We’re fans and we want to laugh. Give us something to care about.
The DVD comes with a director’s commentary, featurette, deleted and extended scenes. The A/V Quality is pretty strong with a Dolby 5.1 Surround track that provides an average soundstage. The transfer runs the gamut without ever really impressing anyone. Still, it doesn’t have any glaring issues. What were you expecting from a sub-genre parody from an underground comedy collective?
