THE FLIGHT OF DRAGONS REVIEWED

“The Flight of Dragons” was a film that I didn’t exist until I was a freshman in college. Apparently, 1982 animated TV movies made a bigger impact on my academic contemporaries than me. John Ritter stars as the author turned hero who finds himself taken to a mystical world. The kicker is that the plot for this film doesn’t even adapt the Flight of Dragons book. The book is about the author being the main character that proves how dragons could’ve existed. This film takes character names and ideas, but works as an adaptation of a rival book from the mid 1970s.

The animation comes from the crew that developed “Return of the King” for ABC TV roughly two years prior to this film. Most of this same crew would stay on at Rankin/Bass to help develop Thundercats. If there’s anything to take away from the film, it’s how gorgeous the cell art looks in HD. Yeah, I get that the TV cut is fun to have in standard definition. I’m a big fan of studios including TV cuts. It’s just that nothing is added to a film that has very limited appeal.
