THE PLOT THUS FAR
Kenny Powers was once on top of the world. Now, spurned by the big leagues and humiliated in his own hometown, he’s heading south of the border to lick his wounds and live the outlaw lifestyle. Danny McBride is Kenny Powers in an all-new season of the HBO hit comedy series Eastbound & Down.
WHAT WE THOUGHT
As a young man, Kenny Powers was the best pitcher in Major League Baseball. With endorsement deals galore and a huge fan base, Kenny was on top of the world until his fastball started to lose it’s speed and his off field antics got the best of him. Last season, Kenny moved in with his brother. In need of work, he became the gym teacher at the local middle school where his high school sweetheart also works. The only person that still believes Kenny can make it back to the majors is Kenny himself, and he will stop at nothing to get back on top.
Kenny, sporting cornrows, is in Mexico and using the alias Steve. This is more out of necessity than want, as he’s been living off of the credit cards of poor Stevie Janowski. Kenny enjoys his life in Mexico, making money as a cockfighter with a new sidekick Aaron and becoming friends with his neighbor Catuey. Still struggling to get over April, Kenny finds a new love interest in the form of Vida.
The season hits a final high note when Kenny meets his real dirtbag father played by Don Johnson. After coming to a point of realization, Kenny sneaks back into America and we enter into the third act of the Kenny Powers story. We won’t get to see that until next year, but HBO has finally created a character that surpasses Tony Soprano for me.
The DVD comes with deleted scenes, outtakes and commentaries on every episode. The cockfighting featurette was interesting, but the other featurettes were all pretty standard. The A/V Quality is strong for standard definition, but it pales when compared to the uncompressed audio of the HBO HD broadcast. I really wish that I would’ve had to chance to see the HD transfer, so I’ll just leave that up to those that buy at retail. I’d recommend it.
