DOUBLE LOVER

DOUBLE LOVER REVIEWED

“Double Lover” shows the world Ozon doesn’t play around. The film works as Dead Ringers by way of Fifty Shades. Even the Fifty Shades comparison feels like I’m underselling the film, but that’s the only erotic touchstone that most Americans have. Multiple actors star in dual roles about people having to understand their sexuality and identity. Once you have that downpat, you can enjoy the up-close shots of various visceral experiences. At its worse, it’s the kind of erotic thriller fare that ruined Hollywood in the 1990s. At its best, Double Lover challenges your views on what constitutes safe love.

The film wants to slap the face of repressed sexuality, but it never quite pulls the trigger. Hell, it felt way safer than Swimming Pool at times. Somehow, one film gets a wide American release and this outing barely made a blip on the arthouse circuit. I’m not sure what to chalk any of that up to now. Most of us should be lucky to have just had the experience. If Ozon teasing erotica gets more people into French cinema, then I’m all for it.
