DEVIL’S ROCK, THE

THE PLOT THUS FAR

Two Kiwi commandos are assigned to the Channel Islands to blow up a giant gun at a beach head fortress. But once inside the foreboding structure they hear unearthly screams and investigate the dark tunnel system to discover the cause. There they find the head of Hitler’s occult Gestapo squadron who has been experimenting with incantations from an ancient tome to allow a succubus to cross over from Hell. It’s all part of a master plan to win the war on the eve of D-Day.

WHAT WE THOUGHT

After a tense time getting past land-mines on the beach Captain Ben Grogan and Sergeant Joe Tane make it to the gun with little problem and get to work planting explosives. They hear terrible screams from inside the German fortification and investigate further. They find all the German soldiers dead, brutally slaughtered and their bodies are torn apart. Suddenly a German officer appears and shoots Tane dead and captures Grogan.

When Grogan come round his he is tortured by the officer Colonel Klaus Meyer who want Grogan to tell him about the Allies’ invasion plans but Grogan tell him northing. The scream start up again making Meyer very nervous . He scoops up a bucket full of gore from the bodies lying around and leaves to feed whatever is screaming. When returns Grogan demands to know what is going on.. Grogan escapes and chase Meyer through the tunnels of the fortification.

”The Devil’s Rock” admittedly has an unexpected and welcome twist, although it’s best not to consider the implications of what the film is suggesting in any kind of historical sense. If anything, it reminds me of an international version of “The Keep”. But, the schlock factor keeps me from taking the release too seriously. At worst, it’s a solid World War II recreation with some Hellboy style knock-off touches. At its best, it’s a pulpy adventure to catch your attention.

The DVD comes with commentary, extended/deleted scenes, featurettes and outtakes. The A/V Quality is pretty sharp, but I noticed a lot of edge enhancement during nighttime scenes. I would’ve loved to have seen an HD master for this release, but I guess that’s only going to be for people in the UK and Australia. Oh well, what can you do?  In the end, I’d recommend a purchase.
