THE PLOT THUS FAR
Without a doubt, Designing Women. was a show about female empowerment,politics, human rights, ethics and big laughs! Created by Linda Bloodworth-Thomason (Evening Shade,. Hearts Afire.), Designing Women ran on CBS from 1986-1993 for seven hysterical seasons becoming a premier landmark sitcom in television history.
WHAT WE THOUGHT
“Designing Women” revolved around four women who ran a design firm together in Atlanta, Georgia. Julia Sugarbaker was an intelligent and outspoken woman, who ran the business out of her house. Her sister Suzanne was an oft married – and divorced – aging beauty queen, who, while also outspoken, lacked her sister’s intelligence and sensitivity. Mary Jo Shively was a divorced mother of two, still trying to get her confidence back after the end of her marriage. Office manager Charlene Frazier was a country girl with a heart of gold, if not the most sense in the world. They were assisted by delivery man, and eventual partner, Anthony Bouvier, the lone male and the lone black in the business, an ex-con who seemed surprisingly comfortable spending the bulk of his time with four white women.
The episodes run the gamut across all seven episodes. However, I’m not sure if I could call these episodes timeless. Half of these episodes weren’t even the best of the seasons in which they initially aired. Plus, I think they slipped a Julia Duffy episode in the mix. Talk about a god awful mix of material.
The DVD comes with no special features. The A/V Quality is pretty sharp, but it lacks any punch-up. The Dolby track keeps all the action upfront. Still, it’s not something that I would call flat out amazing even on a bedroom television. In the end, I’d recommend skipping it.
