WHAT WE THOUGHT
There’s self-depreciation and then there’s taking a dump on yourself. Debra Digiovanni walks a fine line between doing just that. While I can’t say that I ever heard of her before this, I’ve seen the act ran into the ground by many far more talented women. However, that’s not to say that she doesn’t know what she’s talking about. But, how many times can you listen to a chick whine about being fat?
DiGiovanni covers a lot of expected topics, but she does so in a fresh way. I didn’t feel as if I’d heard every joke before even as she mines familiar territory. DiGiovanni is on fire and taking the audience in surprising and sometimes unsettling new directions. I might never erase some mental images of cat loving! Being familiar with DiGiovanni, I easily recognized some of the jokes and the recurrent themes, but as I said earlier–that’s to be expected.
The DVD comes with featurettes about the show and production. The A/V Quality is pretty strong, but it lacks a strong Dolby track. I just wish that someone would’ve thought enough to clean up the channels and support the dialogue a little better. Oh well, what can you do? In the end, I’d recommend a rental.
