DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK

THE PLOT THUS FAR

Set in beautiful Vancouver, four friends set out on an everyday errand and end up in a fight for their lives when they discover the body of a dead hooker left in their trunk. Lead by a sexy, impulsive Badass, her distant Geek twin sister, their bible thumping, Jesus loving Goody Two Shoes friend, and a chaotic, rock star Junkie pal, the group has to put aside their differences to dispose of the body before they’re next. Thrown into their own personal purgatory, they face off against persistent police, a sleazy motel manager, chainsaw wielding triads, and a brutal serial killer.

WHAT WE THOUGHT

Four friends out running errands are forced to reroute their plans when they find the lifeless body of a prostitute stowed in the trunk of their car. But their attempts to ditch the corpse are threatened by a cowboy pimp in hot pursuit. The film is a breath of fresh air in its originality; it sheds all genre clichés to offer an unpredictable, and for the most part entertaining ride. The film blends several genres, one minute acting as a brutal grindhouse slasher, the next a buddy road trip comedy. I works and it’s an accomplishment in itself that a film that attempts to be so many different things never loses focus.

The old-school gore effects have a sweet nostalgia to them, the villains are actually genuinely menacing, and the entire exercise just about manages to hold itself together. The mood does whiplash occasionally, with the light-hearted antics of the crew suddenly being cut short with “Junkie” losing her arm to the Yakuza and “Badass” and “Geek” torturing a man to death in a surprisingly brutal and effective scene, though this adds to the experience rather than detracting from it.

The DVD comes with featurettes, commentary and deleted scenes. The A/V Quality sports a strong transfer for standard definition. The Dolby track is rather strong for an indie genre flick. However, I did notice that the background audio dropped out a lot. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase.
