DARKER REALITY, A

THE PLOT THUS FAR

A group of women wake up in a cold cement basement. Drugged and terrified they find themselves captive to a depraved psychopath whose blood-lust and insanity knows no bounds. Police Detective Balasco and psychiatrist Dr. Metcalfe team up in a desperate attempt to locate the girls and their soon to be murderer a serial killer known as Ghost. But time is running out as Ghost s sick experiments begin to leave the girls tortured beyond recognition. To survive, the girls must band together in a last attempt to save themselves from a fate far worse than death.

WHAT WE THOUGHT

One of the Baldwins plays a serial killer that hates women. A lone detective and hard-working doctor have to hunt him down before it’s too late. I wonder how does this stuff keep getting made. Welcome to the world of “A Darker Reality”. Stay for the gore and try to move past the cliche material. If only it were that easy.

When you review low-budget gorey horror dramas, you’ve got a limited window which you can draw upon. The room for stellar acting goes out the window, as every beat seems to be setup for the next gruesome scene. In that respect, “A Darker Reality” doesn’t fail. However, you still don’t care about the characters or anything that took place. That’s the ultimate failure of the movie and why I can’t recommend a rental.

The DVD comes with deleted scenes and trailer. The Dolby track is pretty weak in the back channels, but it’s not that annoying. The transfer is pretty clean for standard definition and that caught me off-guard. I’m usually conditioned to expect the worst and I didn’t see it here. In the end, I’d recommend skipping it unless you’re morbidly curious.
