BONNIE & CLYDE (2013)

BONNIEANDCLYDEdvdbox

FROM THE BACK OF THE BOX:

Based on the true story of Clyde Barrow, a charismatic convicted armed robber who sweeps Bonnie Parker, an impressionable, petite, small-town waitress, off her feet, and the two embark on one one of most infamous bank-robbing sprees in history.

FROM THE BACK OF MY BRAIN:

“Bonnie & Clyde” was a noble effort on the part of the Lifetime/History Channel/A&E team. But, it’s safe and juvenile. Every decision made is dumb, but at least we have the 1967 version. I know that this tale gets dusted out once a generation to try to find some way to say that kids know better than law & order. That being said, it’s still stupid. Whenever I watch one of these movies, I’m transported back to 1996 and watching a young couple talk about what the Baz Luhrman “Romeo and Juliet” meant to them. Then, they start making out while I try to play Lethal Enforcers.

Television movies are trying to make a comeback. But, if that kind of theater arcade antics are what we can expect, then count me out. I want something that can compete with cinema, but scales back the theatrics to a tie time when tighter budgets produced better drama. That being said, I guess I’m asking too much of modern creators. They have all of the tools of the trade, access to the most stars and a guaranteed audience. They just can’t be bothered to deliver anything other than the basic lowest common denominator pablum.

The DVD comes with featurettes as the special features. But, it wasn’t like I was expecting anything. The transfer is pretty flat, even for standard definition. The Dolby 5.1 track isn’t dynamic, but it carries the dialogue. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase to the curious.
