THE PLOT THUS FAR
Chronicles the life and times of Nucky Thompson, the undisputed ruler of Atlantic City, who was equal parts politician and gangster.
WHAT WE THOUGHT
“Boardwalk Empire” improved drastically in its second season by fine-tuning what didn’t work in its freshman year. Assassination plots can go on for far too long in serial drama, but it needs a certain dynamic to frame the action. Chalky White adds something to the mix this year, but it seems so telegraphed in terms of race relations. Black people didn’t have a good time in the 1920s, we get it. Let’s focus more on this show’s crazy nudity factor.
Plot occurrences are also easy to keep track of; early, simple actions reverberate throughout the series, but it never feels as though ancient history is being dragged out. Every time a past action comes up, it feels logical and natural, the way past occurrences come up in real life. Jimmy’s death (spoiler!) was necessary, as it sets up the dynamic that Winter and company forced too often on “The Sopranos”. People don’t change and thugs change even less. What we have is a study based on the demeaning nature of society’s highest and lowest rungs.
The Blu-Ray comes with a DVD copy, Digital Copy and special features. The featurettes, commentaries and PIP style character bios. The A/V Quality comes with an amazing 1080p transfer and the first DTS-HD 5.1 master audio track that knocked one of the new speakers off the wall. Some people might state that I need to mount my speakers better, I say that HBO just rocks your audio ass that hard. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase.
