BLOOD AND LACE

In 1971, a seemingly lost horror film would set the tone for slashers to come.

Vic Tayback headlines horror coming to home video for the first time.

“Blood and Lace” was one of those films that I always heard about among horror nerds. There was a time before the modern era when films like these seemed to belong more to shared memory and the whims of older collectors. For ages, I thought I’d never see it. Thankfully Scream Factory is here to bring “Blood and Lace” to home video, thus achieving a modern horror milestone. Blu-Ray should be the opportunity to restore and make classic films available to the masses.

While Melody Patterson being stalked by her mother’s killer and sent to an orphanage isn’t something that belongs to the Criterion Collection, it is still important. Some horror fans might say that the film owes heavily to Peeping Tom and Psycho. But, I find that the shifting POVs, the stalking of women and the use of final girls to be far more indicative of the birth of slasher cinema. Maybe it’s the perversion of the fairy tale sensibility, but I appreciate the exploitation flavor of this film.

The Blu-Ray comes with a commentary, alternate opening title and a trailer as the special features. The A/V Quality is quite stunning for a film of its age. The DTS-HD master audio mono track keeps things true to the source. The 1080p transfer is a complete restoration, but it’s not like I’ve ever seen the film before this bow. In the end, I’d recommend a purchase.
