BLADE OF THE IMMORTAL

BLADE OF THE IMMORTAL REVIEWED

“Blade of the Immortal” took awhile to really punch me between the eyes. The film gets touted as Miike’s 100th film without really examining the film. It’s a famous tale adapted every few years for Eastern audiences. The lead is a samurai cursed never to die, so he comes in handy for a girl looking for vengeance. If that was all the film was, then it would be a serviceable Samurai movie. What Miike does is evoke the 1970s Toei scene with his visual panache.

Distributed by Warner Brothers Japan upon its initial release, Miike manages to make mainstream storytelling meet his delectable brand of vulgarity. Where Miike goes in his next hundred films remains to be seen. However, this film suggests that age and a changing culture will still provide room for him to grow. Hell, I now want to go back and read the original comic. Films like this make me want to see Miike tackle other Japanese Entertainment staples.

Halfway through this movie, I wondered what Miike could do with a Lady Snowblood or Gigantor modern take. It makes sense, people.
