ARCHER: THE COMPLETE SEASON TWO

THE PLOT THUS FAR

At ISIS, an international spy agency, global crises are merely opportunities for its highly trained employees to confuse, undermine, betray and royally screw each other.

WHAT WE THOUGHT

Sophisticated spy Archer may have the coolest gadgets, but he still has issues when it comes to dealing with his boss — who also happens to be his mother — in this wicked animated spoof of spy flicks and the sex-crazed agents who populate them. First and foremost, this is an office comedy. However, this office happens to be that of a spy agency, but the petty interactions between the co-workers provides the viewers with a cast that keeps you laughing with references to choking sex, Archer’s prostitutes, and constant drinking are only a few examples. Moreover, this show builds on itself, and you find yourself laughing at jokes sustained throughout the series.

The second season continues the laughs with Archer’s continued fascination with Burt Reynolds and learning the true parentage of the wee baby Seamus. This season is a character building year, as Archer relies more on Mallory and his butler. We start to see Archer’s moral code and how he works within a context of a never-ending Cold War era spydom. Plus, there’s a ton of throwbacks tossed in the mix to Gator, erotic choking and Archer’s greatest fears. If you’re a fan, this will only help to show why you were right to follow the show from the beginning.

The Blu-Ray comes with featurettes and a look at the show’s recent Comic-Con romp. The A/V Quality is a world better than the standard definition release that the first season received. The high bitrate and the DTS-HD 5.1 master audio track allow for masterful presentations of multiple episodes on each disc. If you haven’t seen the first season, I recommend picking it up. However, this is the season that finally pulls down the magic that was Sealab and Frisky Dingo. It’s a wonderful release and one that’s well worth a purchase.
