ANIMAL FACTORY (2000)

ANIMAL FACTORY REVIEWED

“Animal Factory” is a film I saw in an arthouse theater. Seeing the movie get an underground specialty release makes me feel a little old. Basically, the film is a slice of life story adapted from Eddie Bunker’s novel. The cast is amazingly strong, but the real highlight is Mickey Rourke. I won’t spoil the surprise, but Rourke plays the kinda guy that would be super popular during long stretches of confinement. What’s even more stunning is how savage Tom Arnold gets to play during certain scenes.

That being said, this isn’t a flashy prison movie. I think focusing on the dramatics and interpersonal relationships cost the film a ton of mainstream appeal. That being said, it also serves as one of the best semi-memoir adaptations that I’ve ever seen. While the horror and Sci-Fi tends to get most of the attention from Arrow, I strongly recommend picking this one up.
