THE PLOT THUS FAR
From great figures come our most noteworthy inventions, from the telephone to the theory of general relativity. But no great leader is perfect. H2 digs into the scandals and family secrets you won’t find in textbooks in the special 10 THINGS YOU DON’T KNOW ABOUT. Observing the lives of renowned leaders, brilliant scientists and notorious criminals, viewers get an inside peek into their unknown pasts, from Ben Franklin’s nefarious history to Albert Einstein’s hidden family drama.
WHAT WE THOUGHT
“10 Things You Didn’t Know About” plays like really long bar trivia from a guy that wouldn’t know what a bar looked like. However, it’s still substantial in its trivial trappings. They try to make connections between Lincoln’s childhood as an indentured servant to his later stance on slavery. They even make the same connection for everyone from Hitler to Caligula to The Roosevelts and beyond. But, how interesting is it?
Well, they had enough material for an entire season. History Channel has reinvented itself as a beacon for stretching out singular ideas further than they need to go. However, I love the idea that FDR used to take cocaine for sinus treatments. History is weird and I love it when we get to put extra attention on the footnotes. I just wish it was a little more entertaining.
The DVD comes with some short extra footage. The A/V Quality is pretty standard for recent TV on DVD. The Dolby Surround track does the best it can, but the elements are thin. Still, it’s fun for what it is. In the end, I’d recommend a rental.
